Professional cooperation
A cross-border matter may require professionals in several jurisdictions to work together.
General information. The legal assessment depends on the circumstances of each case.
Overview
One case responsibility, several admissions
In a matter with connections to three countries, three professional regulatory regimes, three limitation systems and three court constitutions are regularly involved. The obvious solution – referring the client to a local firm in each place – in practice means that three proceedings run uncoordinated side by side and no one has a picture of the overall position.
We therefore work the other way around: case responsibility stays in one place, and the locally required representation is instructed and coordinated from there. For the client, that means one contact person, one status report and one cost structure, even if several practitioners are acting in the background.
That coordination is work that is rarely visible: translating pleadings, aligning time limits that run differently in different legal systems, and deciding in which country a claim should first be asserted so that one set of proceedings does not block another.
Overview
With whom we work, and in which role
The roles differ, and the distinction is legally significant – who appears as representative, who as expert and who as processor each follows its own rules.
Locally admitted practitioners
For representation before courts and authorities in countries where we ourselves are not admitted. We handle selection, instruction and coordination; the representation itself rests with the locally admitted person.
Experts and expert witnesses
For the valuation of assets, for IT-forensic analysis and for the reconstruction of payment trails. An expert opinion is commissioned when it is required for the matter – not in order to shore up a position.
Tax and audit advice
In estates, corporate transactions and restructurings with a cross-border element. The tax assessment remains with the professionals responsible for it; we align the legal structure accordingly.
Authorities and investigative bodies
Not cooperation in a commercial sense, but participation in proceedings: criminal complaints, requests for information and support in investigations in the client's interest.
Banks and payment service providers
For information on payment trails and for recall requests. Whether, and to what extent, information is provided depends on the applicable law in each case and on the institution's role.
Referring law firms
Colleagues who refer a matter with a cross-border element to us, or conversely take on local representation. The client relationship remains transparently allocated throughout.
Overview
What every collaboration must observe
Working across borders touches confidentiality, data protection and conflicts of interest. The following points apply regardless of whom we work with.
- 01
Confidentiality before collaboration
Information from a matter is passed on only to the extent required for the work and only with the client's consent. A cooperation is not a reason to open a file.
- 02
Check conflicts of interest first
Before any instruction is given, we check whether the other side is or was represented. If the check reveals a conflict, other representation is instructed.
- 03
Written processor agreements
Where service providers process personal data on our behalf, there is a contract under Art. 28 GDPR / DSGVO or UK GDPR. Transfers to third countries take place only on a suitable legal basis.
- 04
Costs before instruction
Instructing local representation or an expert incurs costs. These are set out and approved before the instruction is given – they are not billed afterwards without that step.

An enquiry does not establish a client relationship or responsibility for monitoring deadlines. If a deadline is approaching, do not rely on this form alone.
