Money transferred abroad: which recovery routes exist

Which routes are open is decided by the means of payment and by the passage of time – not by how convincing the facts are.

After a payment to an unknown counterparty, the first question is not who is liable, but which recovery route is open at all. That depends on the means of payment used – and the routes differ considerably in deadlines, prerequisites and prospects of success.

The four routes at a glance

For transfers within the SEPA area, a recall through your own bank may come into consideration. It presupposes that the amount is still with the recipient and that the recipient’s bank cooperates; there is no entitlement to a reversal. For card payments, a chargeback procedure may be available, which is bound by the rules of the respective card scheme and by tight deadlines.

Payment service providers offer their own reporting and buyer-protection procedures, whose scope depends on the terms of use; a refusal in the first decision does not rule out further steps. For cryptocurrencies a reversal is not technically provided for, but transactions are in principle traceable – whether an exchange freezes funds on request depends on its seat and the legal position there.

Why time is the most important factor

Amounts are frequently forwarded within hours or a few days, sometimes across several accounts in different states. Once the money has been distributed, the prospects decline regardless of the legal assessment. Deadlines run in parallel: chargeback procedures are particularly tightly time-limited, and recalls are practically only useful for as long as a credit balance exists.

That is why securing the payment channel comes first, not the conclusive legal review. Both can be pursued in parallel; the sequence is not, however, a matter of indifference.

Describe your matter

An enquiry does not establish a client relationship or responsibility for monitoring deadlines. If a deadline is approaching, do not rely on this form alone.
